Description
A01008A Airfix German Messerschmitt Bf109E-4 (1:72 Scale)
First flying in May 1935, The Messerschmitt BF 109 was a German fighter aircraft developed by the Messerschmitt AG Company between 1936-1945. The BF 109 is considered to be one of the most successful fighter designs in the world when it was introduced in February 1937 , Initially seeing operational service in the Spanish Civil War & was still in service at the dawn of the jet age at the end of World War II in 1945.
It was conceived as an interceptor, although later models were developed to fulfill multiple tasks, serving as bomber escort, fighter-bomber, all-weather fighter, ground-attack aircraft, and reconnaissance aircraft. It was supplied to several states during World War II, and served with several countries for many years after the war. The Bf 109 is the most produced fighter aircraft in history, with a total of 33,984 airframes produced from 1936 to April 1945. Through constant development, the Bf 109 remained competitive with the latest Allied fighter aircraft until the end of the war.
The E-4 variant began development in 1938 & was used as the Luftwaffes primary fighter during the Battle of Britain. Although faster than the RAF Spitfires & Hurricanes, the BF 109 failed to gain air suprieroity over Britain & thus the German invasion was called off. Their best known role during the battle was as fighter escort for Heinkel & Dornier Bombers which targeted RAF airfields, radar stations & later civilian targets.
